Happy New Year to you and Happy New Website to us!
The cobbler's children go unshod, the architect's house is always crooked, the mechanic's car is leaking, the chef's breakfast is as plain as boiled eggs, the preacher's kids are always the wildest and the branding agency's website always needs updating.
We stand before you guilty of neglecting our brand for too long. Whilst we've been busy working on projects for our clients, we have overlooked our own projects.
So, as 2014 begins with us feeling confident that our New Year resolutions will be achieved, we've decided to take immediate action to tackle one of the most difficult projects we've ever encountered, our own website.
And so we begin...
The site that you are currently viewing constitutes our first draft. This is not intended to be the final website, more of an interim measure as we continue to work on the 'main' site.
We have put this temporary site together quickly, using the tools and resources that were available to us, without compromising our client projects. What you see here is our 'minimum viable website'.
Yes, this site is a compromise. No, we're not 100% happy with what we've got live at the moment, but the site does serve a purpose.
In a similar manner to how we deal with client projects, we asked ourselves three main questions:
- What's absolutely essential before launch?
- What are our deadlines?
- What resources are available to help achieve the above two goals?
The answers were as follows:
- Projects/portfolio, contact details and a blog to broadcast from
- Live & public before end of January 2014
- A talented team with a 'can-do' attitude
As is standard practice for when we work on our own projects, we always like to try a new technique, to push outside of our comfort zone and to learn. This project is no different.
We've built the site on a Squarespace platform. We've been keen to use this platform as a tool for smaller client projects where budget, timescales and resources don't always allow for totally bespoke offerings. We've used this project as an opportunity to 'play' with Squarespace a little, so that we can pass our newly found knowledge back to our clients.
What we've discovered is that the platform is well suited to putting websites together, quickly. We've managed to get this site up and running, including creating and adding the content you see here, within a total of 20 hours. That's not bad going.
There are limitations we have encountered, but on the whole, we've been able to put the site live without having to take any time away from our team of developers who are currently busy with some large client sites.
This process has also allowed us to have a presentation tool live, without distracting from the main website project that we are undertaking. It's also helped to ease pressure of not having anything more than a holding page as our main online presence. As mentioned above, this is more a means to an end for us.
So here's part 1 of our website project completed. If you have any questions or feedback for us, please feel free to leave a comment below.
We're currently working on a substantial brand refresh of Huw David Design and a great mix of exciting client projects. We intend to keep you in the loop with all of these events and this website will allow us to do that.
