New Year, new concept

hero and villain

We always like to keep challenging ourselves and pushing forward here at Huw David Design, especially if we can make it fun. So we’ve decided to slightly tweak our weekly Favourites challenge for 2013.

Our Favourites will now become (drum roll) ‘Heroes and Villains’.

Each week, we will present a graphical representation of our favourite thing from the week (Hero) and something that has annoyed us during the week (the Villain). We thought this may help to give a better reflection of our own likes and dislikes and would also build into quite a nice retrospective view of our year.

So there we go, tomorrow (Friday), will be the first run of Heroes and Villains. The pressure is on.

Favourite of the year

Olympic Rings

Huw

Plenty of highlights this year to look back on, especially on the sporting front. Wales’ Grand Slam, Red Bull Stratos and Wiggo winning the Tour De France all came close, but for me personally, the prize goes to the London Olympics. There was a lot of negativity flying around before the Olympics begun, but following the brilliant opening ceremony we were treated to an amazing show. It helped us all forget about ‘other things’ for a while and just watch remarkable people do remarkable things. Inspiring.

Tiger tabby cat, Tigger

Graham

My favourite this year is my cat, Tigger who came after the sad departure of my feline brother, Toby. He may have a devilish habit of attacking my toes whilst I’m in the bath, occasionally jump in the oven, pull the curtains down and generally cause mayhem but that at the same time is the what I love about him.

chelsea1

Harry

My favourite of the year most definitely has to be Chelsea’s old guard finally winning the Champions League. Since Abramovich brought Chelsea back in 2003 the main objective had been to conquerer Europe. With the odds highly stacked against the boys in blue, Di Matteo successfully lead the boys to victory.

Our Favourites #170

Franklin's story

Harry

My favourite this week is the latest campaign for the ‘RSPCA’ in Australia. These simple animated shorts show the effectiveness of brand story telling brilliantly. The message is beautifully simple and has an emotional attachment for all those animal lovers out there.

Mistletoe kissing prank

Graham

I’m a practical joker at heart and when I saw this video of a mistletoe kissing prank my face lightened up. Let the surveys continue…

Christmas memory tree

Huw

My choice of favourite this week is the Christmas video shot by our good friend, Neil Asher from Box Room Films. The film, ‘Our Christmas memory tree’, gives a personal insight into the meaning of the season… family. Beautifully shot and the end outtakes are particularly funny. Nadolig Llawen Neil and thank you for sharing.

Our Favourites #169

Christmas baubles

Huw

My favourite this week is an ingenious, witty product design for Christmas baubles I found via Creative Review which comes in the form of pair of shiny red testicles. The clever idea was executed by London based ad agency, Fallon for Orchid, a charity fighting male cancer.

Beard Ski

Graham

My choice of favourite this week came from a happy accident, an advert displayed in the right column of Facebook for Beard Ski masks. I’m not sure if the ads had been targeted at me because of my recent Movember exploits or because the concept is as weird as I am at times but nevermind, as bizarre a product at it is, it appealed to me. I visited the website and found all manner of bearded heroes were catered for: bikers, pirates, Vikings you name it. If ever there was an item I’d like for Christmas it’d be this… heads up Santa :-)

Mario Beads

Harry

My favourite this week has to be ‘Super Mario 3: An Urban Stop Motion Film’. Any Super Mario fan will throughly enjoy this short film, completely made out of beads…A must see!

Our Favourites #168

Steve Roland 'Pre' Prefontaine:

Harry

After completing my first Movember, I’m feeling inspired by what myself and Graham have accomplishment… So my favourite this week is blog post entitled ‘Hair today, gone tomorrow: Track and Field’s Greatest Mo’s’. A series of inspirational figures ‘who helped raise the (handle)bar for tache’s on the track and field’.

Flight Lieutenant Charlie

Huw

My Movember themed favourite of the week goes to Flight Lieutenant Charlie, a RAF Flight instructor, Spitfire Ale Ambassador, and pilot. Just look at that facial growth, magnificent!

The Chuckle Brothers

Graham

Movember may now officially be over  but for me facial haired fiend continues to have a home as I have a Chuckle Brothers themed birthday celebration to attend the following week. The event comes complete with facial hair, tartan braces, wild coloured shirts and appalling jokes. ‘To me, to you.’

Our Favourites #167

Adam Garone

Harry

This week my favourite has to be Adam Garone, the founding father of Movember. His Ted Talk shows how even the simplest of idea can transform a cause and reach out to people across the globe. A really inspiring presentation!

Michael Owen — Movember

Huw

My Movember themed favourite goes to the Stoke City striker, Michael Owen with his spectacular, tummy chuckling handlebar moustache. Owen’s fan-tash-tic effort puts him among some illustrious sporting company, including Australian cricketer Merv Hughes, Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz, and Liverpool footballer Mark Lawrenson.

Anchorman

Graham

In keeping with the Movember theme my favourite is the tash-filled, ‘Afternoon Delight’ music video from the one… the only Ron Burgundy. Can’t wait ’til the imminent arrival of Anchorman 2. Tash-tastic!

Our Favourites #166

Kulula Movember

Harry

Sticking to my current theme of Movember and brands, this week I’ve found what Kulula has been up to. Their famous Flying 101 plane now has its very own mo and they have been promoting movember on their Facebook page. Again it’s great to see brands interacting with its customers promoting this global phenomenon.

Movember sand drawings

Graham

My weekly Movember themed choice of favourite goes to the exceptionally creative and detailed moustache sand drawings by artist, Tony Plant. As part of Mo Fest the public are encouraged this Saturday to wear Mo’s and draw facial lipped friends in the sand at Newquay’s Great Western Beach. The event starts, tomorrow Saturday 17th November from 12 ’til 2pm.

Movember campaign 'Pass it on'

Huw

My Movember favourite this week is the Dublin based ‘Pass it on’ campaign in which artists, photographers, illustrators and designers took part raising awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer. Each of the 43 creatives designed an A3 poster which you can buy for just €10 with 100% of the proceeds going to Movember. Would love to see a similar event take place in Wales next year.

Our Favourites #165

Movember Coffee

Harry

My favourite this week is a photo I stumbled across on Tumblr. The simplicity of the gesture was enough to put a smile on my face. It’s great to see brands adding personal touches to Movember, and really embracing the cause.

US President — Mobama

Huw

This week saw the historic victory of Barrack Obama winning his 2nd term as US President against Republican candidate, Mitt Romney. The competition was close but I can’t help but think that if Obama had grown a friendly, fetching, facial companion he would’ve won by a country mile making him Mobama. There’s a lesson to be learnt here Cameron, Miliband and Clegg.

Corporal Jones, Dad's Army aka Clive Dunn

Graham

I’ve dedicated my Movember themed weekly favourite to the loveable tashed actor I grew up with, Clive Dunn who sadly passed away this week, aged 92. I have fond memories in my childhood of him playing as Grandad and still chuckle at the repeats of Dad’s Army where he played the doddery pensioner, Lance Corporal Jack Jones. ‘Don’t panic, don’t panic!’

Our Favourites #164

Gilette Movember Campaihn

Harry

My favourite this week is Gillette’s Pop-up Barbershop for Movember. In addition to the free shave and drink you receive, it’s great to see brands supporting such a great charity and creating a fun experience for the community.

Big Ben — Movember

Huw

My Movember themed choice of favourite is the ‘tache that was seen displayed on the face of London’s iconic, Big Ben. A fan-tashtic way of promoting such a great cause.

Mr Tash collection — Movember

Graham

My choice of favourite this week are the characters I designed, ‘Mr Tash collection’, for my personal Movember challenge this this year with profits being donated towards the Prostate Cancer charity. To date the designs have gone well with purchases made from as far as Columbia and even being featured in Creative Review.

Our Favourites #163

Wold Olins — How to grow

Huw

My favourite this week was the insightful live feed of the one-day summit from Wolf Olins, ‘How to grow’. Around 50 brand leaders came together and provided their unique answers to the most pressing question of the decade: how to grow. If you missed the creating feed, a Vimeo channel with all the content will be launched shortly.

LG Lift

Harry

Since Halloween is almost upon us, I’ve decided to choose LG’s ‘Elevator, so Real it’s scary’ as my favourite. Controversial in that real actors may have been used in this stunt, but a wicked part of me hopes that it’s real.

War Commander — Facebook app

Graham

My choice of favourite this week goes to a free to play Facebook app game I’ve been spending my lunchtimes and nights playing calling, War Commander. In this highly addictive online real-time strategy game you become a commander in war and build powerful armies. The game allows you to play against other players in an immersive environment with deadly attacks, futuristic tanks, troops, and planes. Recommended.

Our Favourites #162

James Bond Coke Zero

Harry

With the highly anticapted arrival of ‘Skyfall’ this autumn, my favourite this week is Coca Cola’s ‘You have 70 seconds’ campaign’. It places the user in a James Bond scenario where they have the opportunity to win exclusive tickets. Definitely worth a few minutes of your time!

Felix Baumgartner

Huw

My favourite thing this week was watching the unbelievable event that was the Red Bull Stratos record breaking freefall jump. A truly crazy idea, but what an achievement.

Paul Copner — Photographer from Barry, South Wales

Graham

My choice of favourite goes to a website I designed in my spare time for my good friend, Paul. He came to me asking for a professional website which would display his hobby of photography and easily enable him to update it. Needless to say Paul was a very happy bunny on receiving his website and should you wish to commission the Barry, South Wales based photographer you know where to come.

Our Favourites #161

Malthouse Merch

Huw

My favourite this week without question is the arrival of a delivery of t-shirts for a new brand we’re developing, Malthouse Merch which brings our customers all the fun from the farm. More will be unveiled over the coming weeks but in the meantime feel free to like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter or bookmark our website. It really is worth it!

Water Jet Packing

Harry

This week my favourite has to be ‘Water jet Packing’. Dubbed to make you fly like Superman, I believe it’s more Green Goblin. Nevertheless this looks incredibly fun and possibly a strenuous workout on the core!

graphikfix website — your daily dose of inspiration

Graham

My choice of favourite this week goes to graphikfix, a website I’ve developed in my spare time which I try to daily update with a number of inspirational design media I’v found over the years. I’ve also created an associated Twitter account which sends random tweets of items included which you’re more than welcome to follow.
