Huw

My favourite this week is, Brydge a useful accessory which helps change your iPad into a touchscreen laptop. I’ve backed the concept on Kickstarter.com and look forward to its’ release.

My personal choice of favourite is the handmade canvas for an upcoming Christening designed by my talented friend and former colleague, Lucy Daniels at Dippy Egg. If you’re looking for a unique handcrafted gift look no further.

Huw

With today being global Star Wars today, May 4th, my personal favourite is a related image from Twitter user @rcadden which shows Darth Vader enjoying a pint of the Guinness. Proof is ever it was needed of the power of the dark side.

Graham

My favourite this week is a little practical joke I played on Huw. After a recent holiday to Tenerife he came back with the present pictured above with the caption, ‘I was in in Tenerife and I spent all my money, so I bought you half a mug’. Huw found this very amusing at the time but later in the week I had the last laugh as when he asked for a drink he was given a nice warm half a mug of tea goodness. Needless to say drinking from the ceramic masterpiece is something of a dark art to achieve.

A fish and chip shop website and a rib tickling joke are the choice of favourites this week…

Huw

My choice of favourite this week is the nautically themed website designed for Enoch’s fish and chip chip shop in Llandudno. The boat has definitely been pushed out for this project. Impressive.

Graham

My favourite this week is a joke I heard about an old Italian gentleman, his son Vinnie and a tomato garden. I hope it’s a true story as everytime I read it it makes me smile. Here’s the joke:

An old, Italian man lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig his tomato garden, but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who usually helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.

Dear Vincent,

I am feeling pretty low because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me.

Love, Dad

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

Dear Dad,

Don’t dig up that garden. That’s where I buried the bodies.

Love, Vinnie

At 4am the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologised to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son.

Dear Dad,

Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances.

Love you, Vinnie

The second week of work experience from UWIC Graphic Communication student, Harry Rees…

Harry Rees

Our second week of work experience for UWIC Graphic Communication student, Harry Rees and we have to say hand on heart we’re going to miss him. Not only has he been useful for his tea making and food run abilities but we’ve also been impressed with his standard of work. We wish you the best of luck Harry and look forward to seeing your final university show.

Here’s the second article Harry wrote during his short stay with us:

It was an emotional goodbye on my last day at Huw David Design. With Huw relaxing on the sunny beaches of Tenerife, it was up to Graham and I to man the fort. The pressure of the week would leave Graham much thinner up top, as he parted with little of what he has left of hair. Old age truly taking it’s toll on this lovable giant. (Please note: Graham has lots of hair in reality and yes this paragraph was edited by Graham).

During the week I had the opportunity to work solely on a few live projects. Like any good design agency communication is key, I was lucky to have Graham to the left ready to offer his opinion and advice when asked. Similarly he would go on to ask me the same. This was encouraging, as I knew my opinion mattered. I wasn’t just another work placement… but a part of the team! My knowledge in Adobe Illustrator even allowed me to show the Web Wizard a trick or two.

I’m truly grateful that Huw David Design allowed me the opportunity to work on live briefs. It has added some much needed commercial work to my portfolio, and the chance to design for various clients; large and small. With a few exciting projects on the way I’m anxious to see the final artwork.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Huw David Design; it’s not often in the city you have a curious chicken or lamb strolling past your window. The bonuses of working on a working farm… maybe not the manure.

It was great being a part of the team for the two weeks. I hope I’ll have the chance to work with them again in the future. I’ll miss the banter and the lunchtime buffets. With four consecutive weeks in the industry, I feel I’ve developed so much in such little time. A great way to prepare me for industry and my final term of uni.

Huw

My favourite this week is a new Coca-Cola machine with the word ‘Hug Me’ currently found at the National University of Singapore which dispenses free soft drinks in exchange for hugs.
Graham

My choice of favourite this week is the 68 yard wonder strike by Cardiff City player, Mark Hudson against Derby County. Better than David Beckham’s historic goal against Wimbledon? You decide.

Harry

The highlight of my week was Chelsea’s victory over Barcelona. With the job half done, I’m expecting a feisty affair at the Nou Camp. I’m predicting a goalless draw with a Bayern v Chelsea showdown in Munich.

UWIC Graphic Communication student, Harry Rees returns to to the studio for some work experience…

Harry Rees

This week we’ve been fortunate to see the return of UWIC Graphic Communication student, Harry Rees bless our studio. He’s selflessly used his 2 weeks time off from university to undertake some work experience with us and so far so good.

Here’s an article Harry was kind enough to write on his first week week with us:

After a three year absence from Huw David Design it’s great to finally be back, it’s safe to say the boys have welcomed me back with arms wide open.

Firstly, I was provided with a company email account, this had some sentimental value as now I could consider myself apart of the team. Tuesday to Wednesday was an ease in for what was to come; a wine menu and some business card concepts followed by some typesetting with a whopping 80 page document. In my spare time I also worked on a few concepts for a branding project and was happy to see the following day that they had been used within the final client presentation.

Towards the end of the week, I started on a few visuals for a large client. If one of my concepts eventually gets chosen, the smile on my face will be extremely huge.

With three consecutive weeks working in the design industry now it’s hopefully a good omen before graduating.

A YouTube advertising campaign, a sports drama film and a HTML 5 website are the choice of favourites this week…

Huw

My favourite this week is the viral YouTube advertising campaign which helped launch the Belgian TV channel, TNT. The video first shows a big red button being placed in an average Flemish square of an average Flemish town. You next see an arrow sign pointing at the button with the text ‘Push to add drama’. After that… well, that’d be giving the game away so you’ll have to watch the clip the video to find out.

Graham

My choice of favourite this week is the magnificent film, Warrior starring Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte and Joel Edgerton. Think of all the Rocky movies mixed into one but the difference being adding some outstanding acting performances. I can’t recommend this film enough, my current favourite film of the year.

Harry

This is a particular favourite of mine this week. The launch of an International Campaign for mine awareness day. A great website not only showing the capabilities of HTML5, but also how to use social media positively. So roll up and ‘Lend a leg‘.

A new brand for a delicatessen and a useful website for startup businesses are the choice of favourites this week…

Huw

My favourite this week is a new project we’ve been working on for a delicatessen based in Presteigne, Powys called Deli Tinto. Following our branding, sales were up 30% in February and 43% in March. Great news for all involved!

We have also informed this week that Deli Tinto has been nominated for Wales Deli of the Year. Please feel free to cast your vote here.

My choice of favourite this week is a great website, ‘Startups, This Is How Design Works’, which I found via a tweet from my good friend @aledparry

The website is designed in a visually clever way and helps succinctly explain the importance of design for startup businesses. It also provides some very useful resources.

My favourite this week is our continued involvement with TEDxCardiff, an independent annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. This year the event is being held at the Wales Millennium Centre and we’re fortunate to have the designed the programme. We look forward to helping in next year’s event.

My absolute favourite which still has me chuckling like a schoolboy is the creative way fans of German regional side, FC Magdeburg chose to help their team cease their goal drought. The fans instead of moan and hurl abuse created a number of giant dayglo arrows, took them to the match and pointed towards the goals. What made things even better about this story is that it actually worked with American striker, Chris Wright ending the club’s 558-minute barren spell with a goal in the last 10 minutes of the game. Quality.
